The painting titled “Swallows” is a marrying of Appalachian influences such as quilt squares or stained glass and native plant life and birds. A concept of the past, as pieces are missing, the geometric shapes and patterns of the quilt squares represent home and stability as the swallows appear to be in flight, but are static and unmoving. In contrast, the organic quality of the morning glories growing through represent renewal, growth, and change.
