2025 Chalk Art Competition

During the 2025 Art Struck Festival on April 26th, Johnson City Public Art will host a chalk art competition centered on the theme of “PATTERN”.

The competition will take place in the Founders Park amphitheater area in downtown Johnson City (next to The Pavilion at Founders Park at 105 W. Main St.). Each registered participant will be designated a 4-foot x 4-foot sidewalk space as a surface for his/her artwork design. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and must supply their own materials.

Registration Deadline:

Interested artists must submit an entry form (below) by March 21, 2025 by 4:00 p.m.

Chalk Art Competition Hours:

April 26, 2025

Check-In: 9:30 a.m.
Artwork Creation: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Judging: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Winner Announcements: 4:00 p.m.

Prizes:

Checks will be mailed to winners of the competition following the event.

First Place: $500
Second Place: $250
Third Place: $125
People’s Choice: $125

Entry Fee:

A $5 entry fee is required for all participants. Please pay your fee at the link below. The artist name given on your entry form at the bottom of this page must match the name given when you pay your entry fee. If you do not pay your entry fee or if the artist name does not match on both forms, you will not be eligible to participate.

Participants are Responsible for Bringing the Following Items:

Artists must bring their own water-based chalk, charcoal or pastels. Artists must also bring their own brushes, water and any other materials or tools they need.

NOTE: All chalk must be water-based and temporary (no paint, fixatives, or oil-based products).

Other items artists may wish to bring: smudging tools, spray bottle with water, sponges, Q-tips, rulers, paper towels, wet wipes, knee pads, blankets or chair, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, sketches or inspiration pieces to guide chalk design.

Theme:

The theme for this year’s competition is “Pattern”. A portion of the participant’s final design must contain a pattern.

Judging:

A judging panel will examine each entry and judge based on interpretation of the theme (“Pattern”), overall artistry, and craftsmanship.

Competition Rules:

Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
You may not reproduce an image created by another artist (living or deceased).
People will be walking by so keep your design and materials contained. Respect the other artists and do not walk on their work or have open beverage containers that may spill and destroy work.
Drawings must remain within the designated square area.
This is a family event. Drawings must not contain nudity, profanity, or content inappropriate for all ages.
No flammable or offensive odors.
Failure to comply with these rules may lead to disqualification.

Artist Disclaimer & Waiver*
Please check each of the boxes below to acknowledge that you are aware of and will abide by the regulations of the 2025 Chalk Art Competition. You must check all the boxes in order to be eligible to participate.
- The art I create must be suitable for public, family and children viewing (no nude or lewd work, no profanity). No words or symbols intended as political statements may appear within the art.
- JCPA reserves the right to refuse, stop or eliminate objectionable material and their opinion will be final.
- I will be courteous, friendly and helpful to fellow artists and members of the public.
- JCPA is allowed to create, use and publish photographs, film, video, electronic representations and/or sound recordings of my design and myself at the 2025 Art Struck Festival. I release JCPA, its volunteers, and related parties from any and all liability from such use and publication.
- I release JCPA and individuals involved in the 2025 Art Struck Festival from any liability, product or personal.
- I am aware that artists cannot collect money at their site.
